Hands-on Experience Solidifies Fifth Graders’ Interests in Medical Careers
Through a collaborative partnership with the UMMC medical school, our fifth grade students have been making real-world connections between the science lessons provided by the teachers and the instruction from the medical school personnel. A recent field trip was a special way for our students to experience a day in the life of a medical student at the University of Mississippi Medical School.

The trip started at the top, so to speak – the rooftop of the hospital
where the emergency airlift unit was statione
d. Students were able to walk onto the helipad, step inside the helicopter, and ask the EMT questions about its uses. From the top floor, teams of students worked their way down to the simulation lab and participated in four different stations involving medical scenarios and how to handle them. Scenarios included a heart attack, diabetic malfunctions, a car accident, and an allergic reaction. Students learned how to use an epi-pen, how to notice and treat a heart attack victim, an
d how to avoid being seriously injured in a car accident (wear your seatbelt!). The hands-on activities were very engaging and gave students a sense of excitement for the medical profession.

Students gained a wealth of knowledge during the UMMC visit. Those who aspire to join the medical field deepened that desire, and those who may not have considered the medical field are now reconsidering!
