Davis Students are “Ready to Run”

71 Davis Magnet School students are “ready to run” in the Mississippi Blues Marathon One-Mile Kids’ Run on Saturday, January 11, 2014. 4th grader Adayah Wood says “I am hoping to have fun and do my best. It is very cool for kids to get to do this race and it’s healthy too!”

Since August students in kindergarten through fifth grade have participated in the “Get Ready to Run” physical education program sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi. The physical education program introduced students to the benefits of being active, teaching them just how fun running and healthy living can be. Students learned how to warm-up properly for running, the importance of good running form, pacing to run longer distances, and how to set running goals.

Through the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program, Davis Magnet School strives to meet the diverse needs of each student – physical, social, intellectual – through learning experiences that are engaging, relevant, challenging, and significant. Beth West, the school’s program coordinator, reports that the “Get Ready to Run” lessons have supported this focus by providing students with information and tools to make healthy lifestyle choices that produce
benefits in their overall personal well-being. The One-Mile Kids Run is the culminating activity for the program; all of the students are looking forward to crossing the finish line and receiving their medals.
